1. Media Literacy.
First, participants are welcomed into a trusting environment by our trained facilitators. To set the stage, we dismantle the beauty ideal created by the media that causes pressure to compare and self-reject for most girls and women. Then, participants engage in a process of exploring how media influences have impacted them personally and collectively.
In recognizing they are part of the solution, students are given an opportunity to see themselves and their peers through new lenses that do not condition love based on external appearance and limit worthiness to a particular waist size.
2. Yoga Practice.
Next, participants are able to embody the experience of feeling unique and beautiful just as they are through a guided yoga practice. We use yoga to demonstrate that everyone is different, every feeling is right, and every body is a temple.
3. Changing the conversation.
We create a new conversation away from “body shaming” talk to “I have purpose” talk by allowing students to explore their unique qualities and then demonstrate, to their peers, what is meaningful about them and what matters to them.
4. Committing to compassion.
Students are then asked to make a commitment to themselves and their peers to be courageous in calling up one another when they hear “body shaming” and to being kind to themselves, and therefore each other, by seeing and experiencing themselves as beautiful from the inside out.
The outcome of the Inner Beauty ShopTM is that participants are able to recognize their own impact on the collective and internal conversation about beauty, love-ability, and worth. Participants will leave knowing that who they are is what matters and that their external appearance is not what makes them worthy of love.
